Oesophageal carcinoma is the most varied of any tumour, so that in certain geo-graphical regions there is a very high incidence and in other areas it is rare. It is also well known that squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus very often shows multicentric occurrence, including associated head and neck tumours. The oesophagus runs from the neck through the thorax and into the abdomen The tumour spreads circumferentially and longitudi-nally within the mucosa (intra-epithelial spread), and spreads also in the submucosa and the muscle layer continuously or sometimes apart from the main tumour (intramural meta-stasis).
