Laparoscopic Assisted Hemicolectomy

Laparoscopic Assisted Hemicolectomy

A hemicolectomy is a procedure where a portion of the large bowel is removed due to the presence of cancer. This may involve either the left or right part of the bowel. This is done through a large incision in the abdominal wall. The affected area of the bowel is removed and the two remaining ends joined together. Hemicolectomy is used to treat unobstructed carcinoma of the splenic flexure or descending colon, or more rarely for widespread diverticulitis.
