LAP Sub Total Thyroidectomy

LAP Sub Total Thyroidectomy

The thyroid gland produces hormones that control metabolism. Benign or malignant tumours can develop in the thyroid and will present as a lump in the lower neck. Most tumours are benign. Malignant tumours may cause hoarseness, lymph node enlargement, pain at the site of the tumor, or even breathing difficulties. Total thyroidectomy is usually done when a thyroid cancer has been identified by needle biopsy. The majority of the thyroid gland may also be removed when a benign thyroid demonstrates multiple nodules. These benign thyroid tumours may place pressure on the trachea or oesophagus.
