Thoracoscopy

Thoracoscopy

This procedures allows for examination of the inside of the chest and limited removal of lung tissue via 2 or 3 small incisions with video assistance (Video Assisted Thoracoscopy = VATS). Since this procedure is performed while the patient is lying on his or her side (lateral position), patients should inform their anesthesiologist about sensitive joints that will have to be manipulated during movement. For most VATS there is always the possibility that a larger incision will have to be made due to complications (bleeding) or inability to perform the necessary resection via small incisions. All VATS patients receive a chest tube to drain fluid and air. This tube stays in place for about 24 hours.
